The SMP Process: What to Expect From Consultation to Aftercare

The success of Scalp Micropigmentation, also known as SMP treatment doesn't solely depend on the procedure itself but also on how well the client follows the aftercare instructions. I am going to take you through the entire SMP journey, explaining each step, including consultation, treatment, and post-treatment care.

1. Consultation:

  • Initial Assessment: The process typically begins with an initial consultation. During this phase, the SMP practitioner will meet with the client to assess their needs, expectations, and suitability for SMP.

  • Medical History: The SMP practitioner will discuss the client's medical history by filling out the form, including any underlying health conditions or medications that may affect the procedure.

  • Hair Loss Evaluation: The SMP practitioner will assess the extent of the client's hair loss and discuss their desired outcome. This is an opportunity to set realistic expectations and discuss the potential results.

  • Customized Plan: Based on the assessment, the client will have a customized SMP plan, which may include the desired hairline design and treatment schedule. Typically no less than 3 to 4 sessions.

2. SMP Treatment:

  • Session Duration: The SMP procedure itself can vary in duration depending on the extent of the treatment. Clients should be prepared for several hours in the chair, typically between 3 to 6 hours depending on the area of treatment.

  • Discomfort: Pain generally is well-tolerated during the procedure, there may be some discomfort. Avoid certain medications, such as aspirin and ibuprofen, since these medications can cause you to bleed, and increase sensitivities. Certain drinks, such as tea, coffee, and energy drinks, should also be avoided since they are also blood thinners.

  • Hairline Design For Men: The SMP practitioner will discuss and agree upon the hairline design with the client, taking into account factors like face shape and the client’s personal preferences.

  • Hair Density For Women: The Practitioner will share with you the temporary end result by filling in the desired spot with powder.

3. Immediate Post-Treatment:

  • Redness and Swelling: Depending on the skin type and sensitivity, some redness and swelling are normal immediately after the procedure. This typically subsides within a few days or the SMP Practitioner could apply numbing creams to reduce the redness.

  • Aftercare: Comprehensive aftercare guidelines will be furnished, encompassing instructions on proper cleansing and precautions against sunlight and excessive moisture exposure. For clients with shaved heads and dryer scalps, a moisturizing regimen may be advised to prevent excessive skin shedding.

4. Healing and Follow-Up:

  • Scabbing and Peeling: Scabbing and peeling are common during the healing process and are part of the natural exfoliation of the skin.

  • Follow-Up Sessions: The SMP often requires multiple sessions to achieve the desired results. The number of sessions depends on the individual and the treatment plan, typically is 3 to 4 sessions.

5. Long-Term Aftercare:

  • Sun Protection: It is important for long-term sun protection to prevent fading of the SMP pigments. Recommend wearing hats or using sunscreen when outdoors.

  • Regular Maintenance: The SMP is a semi-permanent solution unlike the regular tattoo ink, and regular maintenance sessions may be required to keep the results looking fresh.

In essence, client satisfaction in Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) hinges on their commitment to and understanding of aftercare. Clients who diligently follow aftercare instructions experience optimal results. Post-treatment care, which includes UV protection, proper cleansing, and product use, plays a pivotal role. This commitment fosters lasting SMP outcomes and reflects a shared responsibility between the client and practitioner, resulting in aesthetically pleasing and satisfying results. In short, informed and dedicated aftercare enhances overall SMP satisfaction.
